What Is a School Psychologist?

Every healthy school environment needs a School Psychologist to serve children and adolescents’ mental health and academic needs. These credentialed professionals collaborate closely with educators, therapists, administrators, and parents to optimize student learning capabilities. School Psychologists prepare children to develop academic, emotional, social, and behavioral skills to succeed in and beyond the classroom. They draw upon knowledge and expertise from development, child, and adolescent psychology to analyze the aspects that influence how students learn and how teachers teach.

What Do School Psychologists Do?

School Psychologists work with individuals and groups to address and treat their deficiencies, including learning disabilities, development delays, mental disorders, and other cognitive, emotional, or behavioral conditions. They provide assessments of children’s intellectual, social and emotional functioning. These professionals implement therapeutic interventions and help students navigate academic, mental health, and emotional issues. School Psychologists also work with students who are transitioning from high school to adulthood by assisting them in applying to colleges. In addition to these responsibilities, these credentialed mental health professionals:

Advocate for mental health awareness in schools and communities
Support specialized education for disabled students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Generate school policies and plan and execute school and community programs
Create a support system for children by building positive school-wide and classroom environments
Assist with crisis intervention and support
