Q: What types of therapies are available using TheraWeb?
A: Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social work, counseling and behavioral therapy are available through TheraWeb.
Q: Is online therapy effective?
A: Yes.
A published study1 showed that students who received speech therapy through telepractice made the same amounts of progress as those receiving traditional therapy. Researchers in another study2 compared articulation progress of students using a computer based program. One group of students used materials through telepractice; the other group used the program in a conventional treatment session. Students in both groups made significant improvements in their articulation skills. The telepractice group had a higher percentage of mastered IEP objectives.
Q: What is ASHA’s and IDEA’s position on telepractice?
A: The American Speech-Hearing Association (ASHA) supports Telepractice. According to ASHA,
“Research and reports to date confirm [telepractice’s] significant advantages to overcome barriers of access to services caused by unavailability of specialists and/or sub specialists, and impaired mobility.”
(ASHA 2005)
“The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) calls for teams to determine the appropriateness of a service delivery model, service frequency and location, and the person most qualified to deliver those services.” (ASHA, 2009)
Q: Is TheraWeb secure?
A: TheraWeb partners with conferencing providers that offer safe and secure sessions with robust
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, unique identity authentication and other security settings. The SSL technology is universally considered adequately secure.
Q: How is service provided to younger children?
A: With any school-based telepractice program, in-room supervision with a paraprofessional or parent is required. Therapy Source requires clients to have an adult present in the room with students.
Q: What do I need to start?
A: Your students will require a broadband connection, computer with 2GB RAM and 2GHZ processor, speakers or headset and a webcam.
Q: Do you supply technical support?
A: Yes, our TheraWeb trained practitioners are experts on how to set up and troubleshoot with the technology. Before therapy begins, the assigned therapist will conduct a mock session to ensure the equipment has been set up correctly.
